TREE DAY
|
Trees I think that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair. Upon whose bosom snow has lain, Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. Joyce Kilmers

The conservation plants program is designed to encourage landowners to plant trees, shrubs, wildflowers, etc. to improve the environment. It also serves as a fund-raiser for conservation programs in Charlevoix County, and helps cover the overhead expenses of the District Office.
The District holds two tree sales a year. The spring sale offers a wide variety of conifer seedlings and transplants; wildlife trees and shrubs; several variety packets, and apple trees. The fall sale offers conifers only.
Spring order blanks are mailed in January, with fall order blanks mailed in July.
Orders are distributed on TREE DAY. The spring tree day is the last Saturday in April. The fall tree day is the first Saturday in October.
If you would like to be added to the Tree Mailing list, please contact the office. Remember tree order forms & information are also available on this web site. The tree order form & catalog can be downloaded from this page. Print the form, complete it & return it with payment. You can also find pictures & descriptions of items for sale on corresponding pages.
If you still have questions, or would like additional information, don't hesitate to contact the office. During the sale, check the Message Board for a list of SOLD OUT species by CLICKING HERE.

Seedlings vs. Transplants
|
Top
|
Seedlings - Seedlings are smaller than transplants, less expensive, and a better choice for large plantings. Easy to plant.
Transplants - Transplants are seedlings that were moved to a transplant bed for a year, they are a bit taller and much sturdier. They are a good choice for windbreaks. Planting requires a little more effort (as they have a more established root system).
Age - the numbers listed (2-0, 2-1) represent the age of the tree. The first number indicates the number of years in a seedling bed; the second number indicates the number of years in a transplant bed. Example: 2-1, is a three year old tree that spent 2 years in the seedling bed and 1 year in a transplant bed.
All the trees/shrubs sold by the Charlevoix Conservation District are bare root stock. Your order will be bundled in nursery wrap with wet shredded paper around the roots to keep them moist.
